Guys. You must know by now how wild I am about typography and getting some cute letter-action on cakes! Well my mind has been blown because I am mega excited about this awesome technique: using candy melts and this very rad flexible silicone alphabet mold to make cool looking monogram cake toppers.
You Will Need:
- 1 silicone alphabet letter mold
- 1 package of candy melts – I used Yolli candy melts in this cute baby blue colour!
- A double boiler, or a pot of hot water and a heat proof bowl set on top
- A large spatula or wooden spoon
- An offset metal spatula or butter knife
- A frosted buttercream cake ready to party!
I’ve only used candy melts two other times in my life, to attempt to make cake pops when they first busted onto the scene via Bakerella. I pretty much sucked at cake pop making (and I much preferred the vintage look of cupcakes!) so I really didn’t get into the craze. However, now that I have this alphabet mold, things are about to get a whole lot more candy-melty! I can’t wait to try it with chocolate, too. Oh shnikey.
Here is the silicone mold I used for this! What I like about this is the size of the letters, and the font! Bold and CAPS, perfect for a modern monogram!
Melt your candy melts according to the package instructions using a double boiler or a pot of hot water with a heat-proof bowl set on top. You want the candy melted and stirred until smooth. Once melted and still warm, add a few tiny drops of vegetable oil and mix in, which will help it along.
While the melty candy soup is still warm, use a spoon or spatula to fill letters you want to use. Use an excess amount of melts here; pat it down gently with the spoon to get rid of any pesky air bubbles. You can also use a toothpick to prick away any air bubbles.
Once you’re sure you’ve filled the whole letter, use your offset spatula to scrape the excess back into the candy melt bowl, while also flattening the letters out smooth. Then, place the mold in the refrigerator for the candy to set up. It doesn’t take very long – I had it in there for 20 minutes and it had hardened perfectly! Gently but firmly pop your letters out of the mold – they will come out very easily because the silicone is very flexible! I didn’t have any fears of breaking the letters – they came out thick and durable.
Nestle your hardened candy melt monogram letter into your cake! Of course, you can spell anything you like – HBD, YAY, PARTY ZONE… there’s even a Numbers + Symbols mold so you could also do a wedding cake topper with L + R as an example… :)
Yes, yes and yes! I can’t wait to make more adorable candy letters! Hope you enjoyed this monogrammy fun tutorial! What’s your favourite way to get lettering on a cake? xo Lyndsay
