The cat-themed cake you never knew you wanted: the litter box cake!!! This crazy ol cake design has been around for many many years, and I finally got around to making my own version. The litter box cake is hilariously simple to make, pretty disgusting but also perfect for the cat lover in your life (that is, if they have a sense of humour, hehe.)

To really drive home the point, I made a little baby mini kitty cake on the side. Here’s a video for this litter box cake tutorial on ye olde YouTube channel:

What do I need to make a sh*tter box cake, you ask?
I knew you were wondering. For this cake, I made a trip to the Dollar Store up the street, and boy it did not disappoint. I got:
A lasagne pan
Tootsie rolls (do you have these where you live?? They’re like chewy dark brown “chocolate” flavoured ultra-sweet taffy logs. Doesn’t that sound yummy?)
Vanilla cookies to crumble up into cat litter!
A scooper-type kitchen tool. You can use an actual litter box scooper but I felt that was going too far, for some strange reason.
Then, you will need a delicious cake recipe (may I recommend this one bowl easy chocolate cake?) or a BOX CAKE MIX of your choice for easy, lazy times!
A buttercream recipe! (may I recommend this simple vanilla buttercream?) or TWO CANS O CRAZY SWEET YUMMY IN YOUR TUM TUMS FROSTING from the grocery store!
To make the half-moon cat cake, I think I used a 7-inch round pan, divided the chocolate cake recipe by filling the single cake pan 1/2 way, then dumped the rest of the batter into the lasagne pan.
Here’s a video showing how to make a half-moon animal cake! (it’s a bunny, but… make it a kitty!)

Instructions for making your box of PURE FUN
Grease and line your little baby 7-inch round cake pan with vegetable oil and parchment paper round.
Prepare the cake according to the recipe or BOX! Preheat the oven, my friend.
Divide the batter: Fill the 7-inch round cake pan half-way with batter. Pour the remaining batter into the lasagne pan.
Bake until lightly domed, then insert a toothpick or cake tester into the center of each cake. You want moist crumbs clinging to the toothpick and no wet batter. Each oven will be different, but the 7-inch round will take around 18-20 minutes and the lasagne pan will take significantly longer – check after 25-30 minutes.
Let your cakes cool completely before frosting!
Prepare your buttercream or tear off the lid of your canned frosting.
Frost your cat cake, adding furry buttercream piping details if desired.
Use the remaining frosting for your litter box!
Crumble up your cookies using a food processor or just crush with clean dry hands. Sprinkle all over the top of the cake.
Insert tootsie rolls into the top of the cake. GROSS! But funny!

KITTIES FOREVER! Do you have a cat? Please share the name below. We love kitties! (this is Percy.)
Happy litter box cake-making, cake pals!
