Currently trending in 2026, maximalist dome cakes are right up my alley. I love a weird shape, I love a sculptural thing, I love an artful, wacky cake, and wow even though I haven’t been blogging in forever, I really have made a few of these adorable dome cakes, also known as cake bombes!

A whole year ago I made this above ADORABLE duo of dome cakes for a lil baby shower for Redia and Caine! Earl grey milk tea soaked vanilla cake layers, with raspberry jam, vanilla swiss meringue buttercream, salted caramel, candied lemon peel !!! and homemade toffee candy pieces. Most of the recipes are from my cake book PLANTCAKES!

TWO years ago (wow, I’m bad at updating this blog) I made another super fun DUO of cakes (above) for a big birthday bash for my wonderful pal Mia! The dome cake was lemon raspberry with vanilla swiss meringue buttercream, and its bestie non-dome cake was dark chocolate with raspberries and chocolate ganache filling, also gluten-free and vegan. Yes, you can make crazy delicious cakes that happen to be dairy free and gluten-free! Recipes from… you guessed it, my cake book – PLANTCAKES: Fancy and Everyday Vegan Cakes for Everyone.

To get the ribbony buttercream squiggles, I used a PETAL piping tip! Here’s a video to show you how to not only how to make a dome cake, but also how to squiggle it up!

Oh boy, two years ago (?!) I also made one of my favourite dome cakes ever, this beauty for my buddy Rafael’s birthday! This one was matcha cake, with matcha and raspberry swiss Meringue buttercream, and homemade black sesame candy. I love how the sesame candy looks like strips of nori seaweed!

And because it has taken me SO LONG to update my blog, a year later in 2026, I made the baby from the above baby shower duo’s FIRST BIRTHDAY CAKE(S)! Happy Birthday, Cici! I modelled them after the baby shower cakes with the buttercream painting, angular homemade toffee bits, buttercream squiggles, candied lemon peel and edible flowers (from the Whole Foods herbs section, folks!). I was only asked to make one cake, but I made a lil baby dome cake to go along with the bigger cake, and I also made it gluten-free for my sweet pal Becky aka CANDY STORE BRUTE.

In other news: I wrote a rom com novel! I can’t wait to share more about it, but I will say I got a literary agent, and now we are working on editing my novel for future submission to editors/publishing houses. I’ve always loved writing, and when I was a wee nine-year-old book nerd, my dream was to be a novelist. I thought cookbooks would scratch that writing books itch, but I was wrong, apparently. Of course I love my three cookbooks, but I decided to give writing an earnest little go, and it’s truly been a wonderful, super challenging journey – but I’ll save all that for another post.

Did I convince you on dome cakes???? Dome cakes forever!
